A family of four went camping for Labor Day.
By nightfall, the stove was set, the milk was on the table, and no one was there.
Seven months later, the mountain gave them back.
On Labor Day weekend, 1974, Richard and Belinda Cowden packed their two children and their basset hound into a 1956 Ford pickup and drove into the Siskiyou Mountains, to a familiar campsite on Carberry Creek near the tiny settlement of Copper, Oregon, in the Applegate country that drains into the Rogue River. On the morning of September 1, Richard and his five-year-old son walked to the Copper General Store and bought a carton of milk. It was the last confirmed sighting of any member of the family.
That evening, the campsite looked as if the Cowdens had stepped away for a moment. A purse and truck keys lay on the picnic table. A wallet and wristwatch lay in the dirt. One of the largest searches in Oregon history followed, and it found nothing. Then, on April 12, 1975, two gold prospectors climbing a steep hillside roughly seven miles from the camp made a discovery that turned a disappearance into a homicide case that remains unsolved to this day.
In tonight's transmission, your host Sierra Sterling follows the Rogue River Mysteries from the river's headwaters to the abandoned campsite, through a seven-month search, a cave that was empty in September, and a paroled killer who refused a polygraph. Then we travel downriver to the river's other open file, a silver object seen from a fishing boat in 1949, and separate what the record shows from what the legend has made of it.

Something followed them into a new home. It waited, then it grew bolder. By the time the world was watching, the Smurls just wanted it to stop.
In 1974, Jack and Janet Smurl moved into a modest duplex on Chase Street in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, believing they’d found a quiet place to raise their family. Over the following decade, the house would become the site of one of the most publicized alleged hauntings in American history — foul odors with no source, disembodied voices, physical assaults reported by family members, and a presence that investigators would eventually label something far worse than a ghost.
By 1986, the Smurl case had drawn national television crews, tabloid headlines, and the attention of renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. What started as a private family ordeal became a media spectacle, a source of community division, and a case still debated by skeptics and believers decades later.
Tonight, host Sierra Sterling walks through the documented timeline of the Smurl haunting, separating verified reporting from the mythology that grew around it, and examining what actually happened inside that Chase Street duplex, and what remains unexplained.

A mother of two. A quiet street in Massachusetts. A kitchen full of blood, and a woman who was never seen again. The phone was ripped from the wall. Sixty-four years later, the file has never closed. On the afternoon of October 24, 1961, in the small town of Lincoln, Massachusetts, thirty-one-year-old Joan Risch vanished from her own home. Her four-year-old daughter, playing next door, ran back to a neighbor’s house with a sentence that would haunt the town for generations: her mother was gone, and the kitchen was covered in red paint. It wasn’t paint. What police found inside the Risch home that afternoon would become one of New England’s most enduring cold cases: blood smeared across the kitchen walls and floor, a telephone torn from its cord, an overturned table, and a trail of red that ended abruptly in the driveway. No body was ever recovered. No weapon was ever found. And in the weeks that followed, investigators would uncover a detail that still divides true crime researchers today, a stack of library books, checked out by Joan herself, about women who disappeared without a trace. Tonight, Sierra Sterling walks through the five-hour window that ended with Joan Risch gone from the world as anyone knew it, the physical evidence that has never added up to a clean answer, and the three competing theories, intruder, accident, and a woman who wanted to disappear, that have kept this case alive for over six decades. A ship found drifting, alone. Ten people aboard. None of them were ever seen again. The cargo was full, the table was set, and the crew was simply gone. On December 4, 1872, the crew of the brigantine Dei Gratia spotted a ship handling strangely in the open Atlantic, roughly four hundred miles east of the Azores. When they boarded her, they found the Mary Celeste fully seaworthy, her cargo of industrial alcohol still in the hold, and not a single living soul on board. Captain Benjamin Spooner Briggs, his wife Sarah, their two-year-old daughter Sophia, and seven crewmen had vanished. The ship’s only lifeboat was missing, along with the navigation instruments and the ship’s papers. Personal belongings, money, and valuables were left untouched below deck, and the captain’s final logbook entry was dated ten days and roughly five hundred nautical miles before the ship was ever found. What followed was one of the strangest admiralty inquiries in maritime history, presided over by a Gibraltar attorney general convinced he was looking at conspiracy, mutiny, or murder. He was never able to prove any of it. To this day, no wreckage of the missing yawl was ever recovered, no bodies were ever found, and no confession was ever made. Tonight, your host Sierra Sterling walks the case file from the deck of the Dei Gratia to the Gibraltar courtroom to the chemistry lab experiments that, over a century later, are still trying to explain why ten people abandoned a perfectly good ship in the middle of the ocean. He knew who you were sleeping with. He knew what you owed the bank. He knew when you’d be home, and he wrote to tell you so. For nearly two decades, a small farming town in the heart of Ohio received thousands of anonymous letters exposing affairs, debts, and secrets no outsider should have known. It began in 1976 with a single note accusing a school bus driver of infidelity. It escalated into a fatal car crash, a gun rigged to fire from a roadside sign, and a conviction that many still believe was wrong. The town was Circleville, Ohio, population barely ten thousand, a place first laid out in perfect concentric circles around an ancient earthwork mound, and later squared into an ordinary grid, as though the town itself had once tried to erase its own strange shape. No one ever saw the Writer coming. Between 1976 and the mid 1990s, the Circleville letters targeted teachers, farmers, police officers, and even children, nearly all postmarked from Columbus, all typed with the same distinctive hand. A man was arrested. A man was convicted. And still, the letters kept arriving, some addressed to the very prison cell where the accused sat locked away. Tonight, we walk the streets of Circleville, Ohio, and trace one of the coldest, cruelest poison pen campaigns in American history, a case where the evidence points in every direction at once, and the real Writer may have simply stopped, and gone quiet, and kept living among the very people they tormented. Tonight, your host Sierra Sterling breaks down the case files, timeline, and unresolved forensic evidence behind The Circleville Writer, from the first threatening note in 1976 to the booby-trapped sign of February 1983, the trial that followed, and the decades-long question of whether the wrong person ever paid for it. Three women. One house. Zero trace. A graduation night that never ended. Tonight, we open the file on the vanishing that broke a city’s sense of safety, forever. In the early hours of June 7, 1992, in a quiet rental house on East Delmar Street in Springfield, Missouri, forty-seven-year-old hairdresser Sherrill Levitt said goodnight to a friend on the phone. Within hours, she, her nineteen-year-old daughter Suzanne “Suzie” Streeter, and Suzie’s eighteen-year-old friend Stacy McCall would be gone. Not fled. Not run away. Gone, in a way that left their purses on the bed, their cigarettes in the ashtray, their cars parked outside, and a shattered porch light globe as the only visible sign that anything at all had gone wrong. Stacy and Suzie had just graduated from Kickapoo High School hours earlier. They had every reason to be looking forward, not vanishing into the Ozarks night. What happened between roughly two and seven that morning has never been answered, despite more than five thousand tips, a rotating cast of suspects that includes a convicted kidnapper, a mausoleum grave-robber, and a suspected serial killer, and over three decades of searching. Tonight, Midnight at WolfCloud Station lays out the timeline, the evidence, the suspects, and the theories, so you can decide for yourself what really happened inside that house. I’m Sierra Sterling, and tonight we’re stepping back into the summer of 1992, walking the halls of a graduation night that should have ended in slammed screen doors and half-asleep goodnights, and instead ended in one of the most unsettling missing-persons cases in American history. We’ll trace the physical evidence left behind, the neighbors who heard something and the ones who didn’t, the suspects investigators have circled for over thirty years, and the theories that refuse to die because no body, no confession, and no closure has ever arrived to end them. Two men. A hillside above the bay. Lead masks over their eyes… A notebook with a countdown no one was meant to read… Fifty-eight years later, the file is still open… On the afternoon of August 17th, 1966, two amateur electronics technicians named Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana left their homes in Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil, and told their families they were going shopping for spare parts. They boarded a bus for the city of Niterói, across the bay from Rio de Janeiro, and were never seen alive again. Three days later, on August 20th, a boy flying a kite on the steep, brush-choked slope of Morro do Vintém stumbled onto their bodies — laid out side by side, dressed in suits and raincoats, faces covered by two crude masks of hammered lead. Beside the bodies, investigators found an empty water bottle, two damp towels, and a small spiral notebook containing a set of instructions that read like a countdown to something neither man survived: a time to arrive, a time to swallow capsules, and an order to “protect metals” and wait for a signal. No struggle. No visible wounds. No confirmed cause of death — because by the time anyone performed an autopsy, the Brazilian summer heat had already taken the evidence with it. In this episode, host Sierra Sterling walks the case file from the discovery on Vintém Hill through the botched investigation, the spiritist and UFO-contact theories that grew up around it, and the questions Brazilian police never managed to close. This is the story of two ordinary men, an extraordinary set of instructions, and a mystery that has outlived every officer who ever touched the file. Keep the doors locked. Keep the volume low. The fog never truly lifts from these ten miles... Something ancient watches from the treeline... But the deadliest things in the woods are always human... Somewhere in the deep, isolated stretches of West Milford, New Jersey, lies a notoriously desolate ten-mile stretch of asphalt winding past the Newark Watershed. Since the early twentieth century, this dark artery has birthed countless legends, from phantom trucks to the ruined masonry of the 1826 Clinton Furnace, mistakenly labeled by rumor as a Druidic temple. Deeper still sit the demolished remains of Cross Castle, an abandoned 1905 estate that became the epicenter of rural satanic panic, and the lingering echoes of escaped wildlife from a nearby shuttered 1970s safari park. I’m your host, Sierra Sterling, and tonight we are dissecting the mythologies and the very real horrors of Clinton Road. We will look past the ghost stories of Dead Man's Curve to examine the grim reality of May 1983, when a cyclist discovered the remains of a Mafia victim, Daniel Deppner, discarded in the woods. This discovery unraveled the sprawling, blood-soaked web of Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski, a contract killer who used these haunted woods to conceal his most gruesome crimes, blending real-life murder with local folklore. They were bound in the dark, left on the green carpet of a decaying resort cabin... The killers walked away into the pine-scented night, taking a twelve-year-old girl with them... For decades, the local sheriff and the Department of Justice looked the other way... In April nineteen eighty-one, the isolated timber community of Keddie, California, became the site of one of the most brutal and baffling unsolved crimes in American history. Glenna "Sue" Sharp, her son John, and his friend Dana Wingate were bludgeoned and stabbed to death in Cabin Twenty-Eight, while three younger children slept unharmed in an adjacent room. Sue’s twelve-year-old daughter, Tina, vanished into the night, her fate unknown until her skull was discovered three years later in the remote wilderness of neighboring Butte County. Despite surviving witnesses, physical evidence left at the scene, and shocking confessions made to mental health professionals, the prime suspects were allowed to slip through the fingers of justice. This episode dives into the dark heart of Plumas County, dissecting the systemic failures, the alleged organized crime connections, and the modern-day forensic discoveries that threaten to blow the Keddie Cabin Murders wide open. Join host Sierra Sterling as she untangles a web of jealousy, corruption, and a cover-up that left a family shattered and a town haunted for over forty years. Keep the doors locked. They walked into the trees and never came out... The bloodhounds stopped exactly at the highway's edge... A man vanished from a moving bus, leaving only his luggage behind... Between 1945 and 1950, a dark shadow fell over the dense, unforgiving wilderness of southwestern Vermont. Centered around the remote, unincorporated ghost town of Glastenbury and the sprawling Green Mountain National Forest, a series of five inexplicable disappearances terrorized the local communities. A seasoned hunting guide, an eighteen-year-old college student, a military veteran, an eight-year-old boy, and an experienced outdoorswoman all vanished without a trace under bizarrely similar circumstances. The sheer inexplicability of these events baffled local law enforcement, drew the attention of the FBI, and ultimately forced the creation of the Vermont State Police. To this day, only one body has ever been recovered—found decomposing in an open clearing that had been exhaustively searched months prior. Was this the hunting ground of a prolific, calculating serial killer taking advantage of the rugged topography, or is there a darker, more primordial force lurking within the woods? Host Sierra Sterling unearths the forgotten archival records, police reports, and chilling folklore surrounding the region famously dubbed the Bennington Triangle. From the desperate searches along the Long Trail to the psychological toll these disappearances took on the community, the evidence reveals a puzzle where the pieces absolutely refuse to fit. Seventy miles off the Scottish coast. A locked iron door. Three lighthouse keepers step out into the gale... and straight into legend. On December 26, 1900, the relief vessel Hesperus cut through heavy seas toward the isolated cliffs of Eilean Mòr. On board was relief keeper Joseph Moore, arriving to swap shifts with the men stationed on the rock—Thomas Marshall, James Ducat, and Donald MacArthur. They had every reason to be waiting on the landing platform. The light had been dark for nights, and the relief ship was days overdue. No signal flag was raised. No welcoming call echoed over the waves. When Moore stepped inside the lighthouse, he found a scene frozen in time. The clock had stopped. The table was set for a meal. Two set of heavy oilskins were missing from their hooks, while a third remained untouched. The men were gone without a trace, leaving behind only an unfastened gate, damaged landing gear from a massive storm, and an eerie silence that has lasted over a century. In tonight’s file, host Sierra Sterling breaks down the chilling timeline, the investigator's damp crime scene inside the tower, and the theories—from rogue waves to phantom forces—that still haunt the Outer Hebrides. Seventy miles off course. A quarter tank of gas. Five men step into the dark... and out of the story." On February 24, 1978, five young men from Yuba City, California- Jackie Huett, Bill Sterling, Jack Madruga, Ted Weiher, and Gary Mathias—drove north to watch a college basketball game. They had every reason to come straight home. Their Special Olympics tournament uniforms were laid out for the next morning. They were last seen at a convenience store buying snacks for the drive back down the valley. They never made it home. Four days later, Jack Madruga's Mercury Montego was found abandoned deep in the frozen high country of the Plumas National Forest, seventy miles in the wrong direction. The car was unlocked, undamaged, and had plenty of gas. What followed over the spring thaw would become one of the most chilling, illogical cold cases in American history. In our inaugural file, host Sierra Sterling breaks down the timeline, the eerie evidence left behind inside a forestry trailer, and the theories that still haunt the Sierra Nevada forty-five years later.
